Frequently asked questions
An evaluation gathers information about your child’s specific needs and will vary from child to child. Evaluations are generally scheduled for one to two hours in order for the speech-language pathologist to interview the family, complete any formal assessments warranted, and observe interactions and speech and language skills during play or reading and spontaneous conversation. Questions are encouraged during the evaluation. The findings from the evaluation may be summarized at the end with recommendations. However, you will receive a comprehensive evaluation report with testing results, interpretations, findings, parent’s concerns, background information as well as short and long term goals for initiating therapy within two weeks of the appointment.
Feeding and swallowing concerns can include, picky eating, forward resting tongue posture, tongue thrust swallow pattern, mouth breathing, and more. These challenges can be addressed during therapy after an evaluation. More complex situations or infants with difficulties with feedings by breast, bottle or tube may be referred to a specialist.
Parents are encouraged to sit in during their older child’s session. If parents do not actively participate in the session, the activities and targets will be reviewed along with the practice ideas suggested at home. For younger children, parents are an important part of the early intervention process and will be coached in a way to integrate the strategies into their everyday life.
Evaluation reports from other entities are accepted and can be brought to your first session or emailed ahead of time to andrea@hopespeechtherapy.net
